Brunswick Model 15
5/6/2013 11:55:51 AMBill B.
Hello; I've got a chance to buy a Brunswick model 15 and from the photos that were sent me it looks like there are several loose ( not connected ) wires going down to where the speaker is located...The ends are lying on the shelf where the speaker mounts. Is that a battery operated radio or does it have a second chassis on the shelf where the speaker mounts and it is missing. Or does that bunch of wires go to the speaker. Is $300 dollars too much? The cabinet is mint condition. Thanks. Bill B.

Eh, no prize there. Pass on the $300.00 More like $25.00 as is.

You have to ask yourself, "Is this set worth $300 to me?" Because it's unlikely that anyone else would find that this particular set would be worth $300 to them.

That may sound like a snide answer, but I am being sincere- sometimes market prices are irrelevant if something "speaks" to you for whatever reason. Go with your gut feeling on this one- but don't expect to fix it, flip it, and double your money; at least in the first half of this century.

Thanks for the input.. I wasn't thinking of it as a quick fix flip....I think it would look great in the living roomm...You guys didn't answer my question about the loose wires and/or whether those wires go to the speaker or to a battery pack...If it is battery operated I would not want it. I looked at model 15's on this web site and it seems some are transformer and some are battery.

Model 15 is an AC set. Model 15-B is the battery version. For the battery version, the illustration on this site shows the two batteries mounted inside the cabinet to the left and right of the speaker. Sounds like you have the battery version; but check the ID plate to be sure. Or look at the audio output tubes- the AC version uses two type 45 tubes, the battery version uses two type 31.

Tom: Thanks for the answer...It is always nice to learn something new.I have'nt seen the radio in person, only photos sent to me by the owner. I'll bet that those wires are for the batteries.

Tom : I can't really tell from the schematic, but is the radio in question a TRF or superhetrodyne? Second question is how hard is it to find those old #30 and #31 tubes ? Thanks.

Bill;
The radio looks for sure to me like a TRF. As to the wires hanging down, the schematic looks pretty conventional, so connecting them properly shouldn't be a problem. As I have said before, a radio station where I worked had a TRF off the air monitor, and since it was tuned once for 1230 kHz. and left there, we didn't have the difficulty that is associated with tuning the TRF, but it sure sounded great for AM radio, better than you could ever expect from a hi-fi superhet. Actually, we put out pretty good fidelity, and our monitor sure played it well.

Bill,

Ask the seller if the tubes come with the radio? If they do they are probably good (original).

The tubes can be found on a lot of tube seller sites but can be very expensive.

I have two battery operated radios that use these tubes and needed four of the 32's. Found them on ebay, very expensive.

It's a TRF, with four stages of RF amplification. #30 aren't hard to find or very costly (I bought one from a used-tube dealer a couple of years ago to replace the one in my Philco Mystery Remote Box, and it wasn't horribly expensive- several bucks, as I recall). Can't say about the audio output triode #31 tubes- never owned anything that uses them. But if they are like other vintage audio output triodes, they are probably relatively expensive.

Thanks every one for the answers and the help...The owner of the radio says it doesn't work...That could be anything from those disconected wires to a bad power cord. It has all the tubes with it. The cabinet looks like brand new and so does the grill cloth....I'm thinking that for a radio that doesn't work $300.00 is a tad steep, or is that a decent price?
