TRANSFORMER

I dont want to be a burden but I need to ask this question again because Im new to this and need some help. I have a 1946 RCA Radiola model 61-8 that had a bad output transformer that was shorting out my rectifier tube. I tested the transformer and it was shorted internally. I was wanting to know if anyone know a good place to find a new transformer. Ive found the company of Hammond Mfg that has numerous transformers but I dont know which one, if any will work. The output tube is a 50L6GT and from what ive read it takes a transformer with a 2000 ohm impedence primary. I however cant find one with a centertap on the primary like the original one had. Any advise would be GREATLY appreciated.

If you have only one 50L6, I don't understand why you would need a center-tap?

You should be able to use a Bogen T725, which is under $5. http://makearadio.com/misc-stuff/t-725.php

:The center tap primary wire is connected to the 35Z5GT rectifier tube and the other two primary wires are connected to the 50L6GT output tube.

Troy,

According to the schematic what Rich advises will work for you.

Sir Troy . . . .

Befores you'se gets togethers and amasses your vast bags of munnies.

Lets explore one possibility that ocassionally occurs on audio out-putsies transformateurs.

The winding procedure initially has the primary of mannnnnnny turns of velly-velly fine wire, going onto its bobbin core for the primary.

Then there is an insulative overwrap and the overwind of the few turn secondary winding.

Some times that primary shorts /partially shorts out, to the metal I-E cores.

The core is then mechanically bound with a square "C" clip surround and has metal mounting ears on its end for the mechanical physical mounting of the transformer.

Thefore the core is grounded to the chassis . . . . ALSO . . .having any wire connections leaking / or / shorted to it.

If you will lift the transformer mounting bolts / rivets so it floats from any connection to the chassis, try powering up to see if it still is pulling excess current, if it works, let it run just long enough to see if there is excess heat build up or SMOKE / odor being smelled with your sniffer up REAL close to that transformer and a now AC unplugged set.

At times in the past I have come up with working units that only needed the insertion of a plate of bakelite / phenolic /plastic to insulate the t-tormer from the chassis, and the use of nylon mounting hardware.

The transformer unit core proper will then be B+ hot to any snoopy persons. But it is INSIDE of a cabinet and the additional installed RED lettered warning message of:

DANGER . . . LETHAL 300,000 MilliVOLTS of High Voltage Inside.

Should scare off intruders.

.

Check it out . . . you also just might have that situation, with no transformer winding damages.

73's de Edd

Before you give a colleague a piece of your mind, be sure you can spare it.
