Rider 3-54 Philco; Parts list uses name as compensating condenser ex#20. Set was very dirty, I feel that dirt & oxidation are playing a part with set not receiving as good as it should. Could these be replaced, with what or is cleaning possible?

Hi Bob,
Cleaning is possible. I learned on this forum that many parts can be placed in the dish washer. Some of the guys have put whole chasses in the dishwaser.
I tried it myself with a tuning condenser from this winter's project, a Zenith 8S463. Results have been excellent.
Make sure the units are allowed to dry. I didn't put in any soap in the dishwasher, either.
I wouldn't risk it on a radio prone to silver Mica disease, but that shoudln't be a problem here.

Best Regards,

Bill Grimm

All:
In the Delta radio shop, we would clean the entire guts of a radio or any other box in an ultrasonic cleaner with plain old Calgonite dishwashing powder. They were cooled in flight with pressurized cabin air vented overboard, and they would be full of cigarette tar with dust glued throughout. We would then overnight them in a 150 degree oven, and they would be nice and shiny the next day. I never heard of any problem caused by this cleaning method.
