I have just came into contact with a weird radio......... its model # is a 05GSE-1066. its an airline radio so montgomery wards of course. it has the option of batery and power outlet use. a handle it has an internal Am loop anttena wich is stanadard the a back that opens exposing the radio. the backs ment for putting in batterys. ive had the radio out of its cabinents. if u may and it exposses which im certain to be asbestos. not to un-common but kinda scary seeing that i was not wearin a mask of course it not easly visible from the outside. the insilations in good shape. a little shaky though. when i get around to recaping it im going to put a veneer over it and mabe some paint to not scare somene who may recognize it. what im hoping is katlin is a brownish orange white marble swirl finish.im stilll a new radio guy at 14 yars old im worried about the asbestos in 3 other radios ive collected. even though im new i have about 18 gems of nostalgia. i love the look i have a greybar 310 which i unprotectedly pullled out a chunk of. a airline radio from 1957 had a heat shield and a cf 255(Emerson) i picked up for 20 bucks of course a a curtain burner(resistance line cord) which i kept in case because of the chance i wouldnt be able find a replacement or substitute resistor or variac or power dimmer... sorry for the long passage and miss spellings. can some one tell me when this radio may have been made (1940s??). im talking about the first radio i mentioned.

Seth, go to "radioattic.com" and click on the archieves they have pictures of over 5000 radios, yours might show up. As for the Asbestos as long as you don't creat any dust you should be fine. There are millions of us out there that are still kicking even after being heavily exsposed to the dust over the years, me being one of them. Best 2 U, George T

Hi Seth, you could do a Google search and type in (Radio Museum) and the first on the list should be the one your looking for. Type in the information and the tube line up and see what comes up. It is a member site so it is limited to what they will show you. The other option is to post a picture of it on this site and I'm sure somebody out there will know what you have. It is not to unusual not to find it on the Radio Attic site but it is a good place to start. Best 2 U, George T

I also own this Airline 05GSE-1066 radio. I have found no information on it. However it seems to be almost identical to the 1950 Firestone 4-C-16. Bill

Airline around 1938 or so starting coding the year into the model number. The first 2 numbers reversed gives the model year. 1950 suggested by Bill should be correct.

What Bill said is - "similar radio to the 1950 Firestone 4-C-16". Both the Airline and the Firestone versions were most likely built in the same factory.

The Wells-Gardner Company in Chicago built Airlines for Montgomery Ward.

Asbestos can be Encapsulated. Google it. Some people would just paint the asbestos with white glue to prevent fibers from floating around. Clean the chassis, cabinet and speaker really well too. Asbestos is not poison but the dust will lodge in your lungs forever.
