AK model 20 compact

I recently aquired this radio. After replacing the AF transformers. most caps and resistors I get good signal sound when I use my signal generator. When receiving am signal however sound is garbled. I am using a fairly large speaker and output transformer. Could the speaker (size)be part of the problem?

Could be. The sound power output of this set is only in the hundreds of millwatts, so an efficient speaker is necessary to get acceptable volume without distortion.

If you can find a decent set of high-impedance headphones, give them a try (without the output transformer). If the sound is clear, chances are your speaker setup is flakey: inefficient speaker, or impedance mismatch.

If the sound using the headphones is also poor quality, I think that I would look for faults in the detector stage. A bad tube or incorrect biasing here would cause audio distortion.

Thanks! Kind of confirms my thoughts. I'll check it out

I had not realized it but my bias voltage was indeed to high. Adjusted to specs and the radio plays very well for an early battery trf. Thanks
