Zenith 8S463 tuning shaft wobble
3/13/2013 9:33:57 PMEddie
Does this model usually have just a noticeable amount of wobble in the tuning knob shaft? I'm fixing it for someone else who wants it "just like original". With the aft bushing in its place, the front bushing that goes through the chassis is wide enough to allow just enough wiggle to make me really wonder. I could probably find a nylon bushing for it if this is abnormal.

Thank you,
Eddie

Hi Eddie,
There needs to be a bushing at the volume control end to reduce the wobble. I suspect a bushing at the knob end was there originally, but mine didn't have it, so I can't be sure. The wobble on mine isn't that noticeable.
I expect to get it fully together next week. I will know better then.

Best Regards,

Bill Grimm

I would think that any noticeable wobble in the tuner shaft would be undesirable on ANY radio.

I'd say do whatever you must to eliminate it.....as suggested by Bill.

Your client will most likely appreciate it.

I don't think that Zeniths ever won any prizes for "high precision manufacturing" so some shaft clearance was probably deemed acceptable when the set was new. It may even have been thought necessary, to prevent seizing up due to corrosion. If the wobble seems excessive to you, your nylon bushing idea is perfect- there is no way that the metal shaft can seize to a plastic bushing, and it should last indefinitely.
