Hello, looking at the scematic on this radio, the 2 filter caps the common connection to the rectifier tube would that be the positive side or negative on the filter caps, I am having a bit of trouble determining that is the cathode side of the rectifier, am I correct?

Hi Dale,
The positive of the filters go to the 6X5G cathode. The negatives go to the field coil of the speaker. This is a common arrangement in radios of this vintage.

Thanx Bill, I have finally got this set to play, reception is ok but im getting some ac hum that I cant seem to get rid of, also sound is a bit garbled, I have replaced the transformer with an original from a doner set and so far most capacitors are new including a new 6x5 tube and 6k6 audio tube, i really dont know where this hum is coming from, any ideas?

Here is 5S319 schematic:

Be sure pin #5 is 20 volts or so negative when measured from pin #8 on 6K6. If not you will have distortion. The tube will also draw too much current and may cause hum.

Hi Norm, thanx for the info, I measure -21volts between pin 5 and 8 on the 6k6, and I am getting 249 volts off the rectifier cathode to groung so Hv is ok, tube shilds are in place also, and I was very carefull to place the leads in the exact same place when i swaped out the transformer, actually what I did was clipped the wires off right at the old trans and the replaced them one at a time, I will replace the other paper caps in the tuner section and see what happens.

Believe you have the transformer wired correctly. Tubes light and B+ is reasonable.

That 6K6 tube is operating properly. Could be a leaky cap in the RF section. A leaky cap on the AVC line will cause distortion mainly on stronger stations.

Hi, Norm, I will tackle tose 3 other paper caps and see what happns, I am quite pleased that I got it play, so now just some tweaking and should improve the sound quality, I was also thinking of adding some AC line filter caps like some of the Philco sets have in the bakelite block, I still have a few of those caps left over from a previous job, any thoughts on that?

My 2 cents worth:

The small caps on the AC input are mainly there to suppress RF emissions from the set so it doesn't cause interference with nearby sets. They don't materially affect the performance of the set itself.

Oh ok, I thought that they would filter out any interference coming in on the AC line, good to know,
Thanx Tom.
