Zenith 9S244 AM,SW radio. SW works fine. No sound on AM. I think I may have inadvertently severed several cat hair wires from what I think is the I.F. Transformer with a soldering tool.

This is where using the schematic to signal-trace comes in handy
This tutorial should explain things for you:

:All bands go through the IF amp. If the SW is working, then your trouble must be with the osc or RF coils, switches or circuity for the BC band.

I would think you may have damaged the oscillator coil for the BC band. The same IF is used when in the SW band.
If you have the schematic check the coil for continuity.

::It's great to hear the radio singing sweetly on the BC band again. Thanks to your advise, I was able to locate the problem in the oscillator coil. Yup, I took out three of the cat whisker leads with my wandering soldering iron. I was soldering in the area and didn't see the damage I had done to the thin coil leads. Knowing where to look and what to look for and being more careful with my wayward soldering iron, I was able to repair the damage I had done.
