HI MIKE:

THE ANSWER IS NO IF YOU ARE REFERRING TO THE SMALL DIAMETER PIECE AT THE VOICE COIL.THAT IS NEEDED TO KEEP THE VOICE COIL CENTERED.

I USED THE GENERAL CEMENT PLASTIC SHIM SET FOR CENTERING THE VOICE COIL.TTHEY ARE CALLED SPEAKER SHIMS.

Hi, definately need the spider, some recene shops use the new style spiders that are used on pm speakers, they are available and all You need to do is match the voice coil diameter make sure it is perfectly centerd and glue it on, I believe they use epoxy glue for that, then your cone can go on .
