I have sucessfuly rplaced that bulb with a miniature bulb with wire leads on it. It was quite a few years ago and I do not have the bulb number. This has also been discussed on other forums.
What is critical is the amp draw of the bulb. It must be extremely low. The voltage does not appear to matter. I got the bulbs from Radio Shack when they were still in Canada. It was necessary to sit the bulb in a drilled dowel in the original socket and wire the leads in outside the socket.
The bulb dims when on station. If you can find a bulb give it a try, the worst that would happen is to burn the bulb out. I would even try as low as 6 volts as long as the current is MUCH less than 0.1 amps.
