I believe that since the "S" is grounded, and the grids are labeled "G1, G2, and G3", the "S" would be shield.

You're right, except in the 6SA7, it does connect to the screen grid too.

Pin 1 on this tube is grid 5 according to RCA Tube Manual. It actually show it as S G5.

You are right Grid #5. SA7 is the only tube I know of that is connected differently between metal and glass tubes. I've never seen an interchangeably problem due to this difference?
