Audio output transformer needed
11/27/2012 10:17:38 PMMark Johansson
Been a looooong time since I've posted here, spent the last couple years messing about with Victrolas!

I have a General Electric portable tube radio model # 145. the primary of the audio output transformer is open. It's 10K primary/.3 ohm secondary. Output tube is 3V4

Anybody have any idea where I could find a replacement?

Here are the part numbers from the Sams Photofact:
GE: RTO-067
Stancor: A-3879
Chicago: RO-16
Merit: A-2932

Thanks, Mark

He has the stancor A-3879 listed. for $7.50 You have to check with him to see if it is still in stock.

You should replace the capacitors on the plate and grid of the output tube so you don't have the same problem again. All the capacitors and electrolytics should be replaced.

:I'm confused? How can a primary be open & still have a 10K reading? I haven't checked mine but still it does sound strange. Mine is also a G.E. 145 & it's up in the back room. It did work the last time I used it. Come summer I'll check it again or compare it to another 3V4 set & compare.

Chuck: I got the new transformer today and the radio is working fine now (though see below)

Dave: I did a total recap of this radio a few years ago. I was working on it because the D batteries had leaked (serves me right for letting it sit on the shelf with batteries). Once I got it all cleaned up I discovered the transformer was open. Replaced the trans and still didn't work: the cap between the 1S5 plate and the 3V4 grid was shorted. I also found that I had connected the 90 mf cap to pin 2 (plate) instead of pin 1 (filament) of the 3V4 output tube. (sheesh!) So I fixed that and now everything's OK.

Raymond: The primary of the trans did read open, the 10K was the spec listed in the schematic.

Anywhoo, thanks everyone for all the help and suggestions!

Mark
