PHILCO AUTO RADIO PROBLEMS
11/21/2012 6:32:51 PMALLAN ST.MARIE
I HAVE A 49 PLYMOUTH PHILCO CAR RADIO, MOD. P-5OO6, WITH SEPARATE TUNERS FOR PUSH-BUTTONS AND FOR MANUAL TUNING; RF IS 6BA6, MXR IS 6BE6, 1st IF IS 6BA6. THE VOLUME WITH MANUAL TUNER IS ABOUT HALF OF THE VOLUME WITH PUSH-BUTTON ON THE SAME STATION; ALL VOLTAGES AND TUBES LOOK GOOD AND CURRENT LOOKS NORMAL. ANY IDEAS WOULD BE APPRECIATED.
THANKS VERY MUCH,
ALLAN

Clean all the contacts for the push buttons. One set of contacts is for manual tuning.

::HI WARREN; SORRY, I HIT THE WRONG BUTTON, THANKS FOR THE SWITCH INFO; CONTACTS ARE HARD TO GET TO, USED CLEANER SPRAY WITH NO LUCK; WONDER IF IT COULD BE SOMETHING ELSE?

PD5006 is essentially the same as PD4908. These radios have two separate antenna adjustments, one for push-buttons and one for manual tuning. The antenna adjust screws are near (I believe under) the antenna socket and should be marked “manual” and Push-button”. With the radio set for manual tuning and tuned to a weak station about 1400 on the dial, adjust the manual antenna adjustment for maximum volume. There is also an R.F. shunt adjustment on the back of the manual tuning coils which needs to be peaked at the same time as the antenna adjustment. I assume that you have already replaced ALL of the original black striped capacitors? If not, you are just spinning your wheels trying to get proper performance out of the radio.
