capacitors

I have a question about capacitors in a series. I can't seem to find a .00015 mfd cap. Is it possible to use a .001 in it's place? I used an on-line calculator that showed using about five .001 in a series would be about .00016 mfd. Is this even acceptable to do?

Hi

Capacitors with that small of a value are usually listed in pf. Try looking for 150 pf. You should be able to find values when expressed this way.

You could use larger caps in series but that takes up more room and leads to connection problems.

:Thanks Norm...I checked different sites for that type of capacitor...they all have hundreds of questions of what kind and by who. "VERY CONFUSING"
I'm used to the film capacitors marked mfd. I'm not sure what type or what company to use. Any ideas? Hence the name newbie

You will be ok if capacity matches and voltage is at least as high as the original. There are different kinds of construction but they do the same job in radios.

One thing to watch for is polarity in electrolytics. Electrolytic caps will be marked with polarity and need to be installed that way.

Here is a link that does have your capacitor. About half way down the page.

Yeah! I tried their website...the closest I came to the .00015 mfd was a .00047 mfd. I thought about using three of them in a series which came in extremely close.
And!!! I used to order from them but I think they got tired of my questions because they don't respond nor do they fill my orders any more.
They have good product "but".
again the reason why I search for other venders.

Dear Newbie:
Exactly what do you need this cap for? Depending on the circuit, another, easier to find value might work equally well, at least until you can find the value you are looking for. Can you give us the make and model of the radio, assuming you are working on a radio, we are kinda in the dark not knowing enough about your needs to give any more advice.

0.00015 uf = 150pf

So what you need a 150pf cap.
150pf caps can be purchased almost anywhere.

As for 0.001uf = 1000pf .... so that is not a good one to substitute for 150pf.

...Such as mica capacitors and small ceramic capacitors.

Values are critical in tuned circuits and should not be deviated by much, unless another appropriate means of re-tuning the circuit is possible.

For audio and bypass circuits values are less critical. An increase in capacitance increases bass passage or shunting, depending on how the capacitor is wired.

In some cases, where a very small value capacitor such as the one you listed is used, the capacitor might be used to do something like filter off very high frequency RF while allowing AF to still pass by.

Hi, Just radios has a very large selection of caps, they have this in a film cap of this value, but if you're replacing a mica type they have those also.
