11/9/2012 8:58:32 AMRandall Hornback
I am looking for a vibrator 6 volt positive ground for a Ford Car Radio Model GF 890 6 Button.Anyone out there who has one please let me know, and what cost and shipping are. Will appreciate very much, radio was working until vibrator quit, lost AC voltage to step-up Transformer, and Dc voltage out-put on rectifier tube.
Thanks
Randall

Hi Randall,
How many pins on the vibrator?
I have a 6 pin 6 volt one and it worked fine in 2005.

I think AES still carries them.

Have you replaced the buffer capacitor? Those things really need to be rated at 1500 volts, too.

All the Best,

Bill

Yes Bill i replaced the buffer capacitor with the right voltage rateing,as i said the radio was working fine until the vibrator quit.

Hi Randal,
AES still has them, although $30 may seem a bit pricy. http://www.tubesandmore.com/search/node/vibrator

The four pin type are more common than the six pin type. Originals can be found on eBay, however, ones that have sat on a shelf need to be fixed.

These things look a lot like tubes but they are VERY different. A tube can sit on a shelf for decades and be just as good when it comes off the shelf as it was when it went on the shelf. Vibrators are different, they go bad on the shelf.
They have another difference, they can be opened and fixed. This can be done with vibrators that have sat on a shelf for a long time and come off bad. They can be opened and their contacts cleaned. There is also a process of rejuvenating them with house current and a 60 watt bulb, If you need that I can tell you about it.
Don't Google 'Radio Vibrator.' I did that and got junk emails from spammers who had flagged me as an overweight, sex starved middle-aged woman.
I asked about the buffer capacitor because often a failure in the capacitor precipitates the failure of the vibrator. That is not the case for you, though.

Best Regards,

Bill

Hi again Bill, a big thank you for the information you sent my way on vibrators.I had order 2 vibrators from Tee-Bird Car Parts, got a 6 volt and 12 volt they were the new type.I had installed the 6 volt in the Ford Radio 6 button. It was working fine, then i dont know if it failed or maybe i by mistake went from 6 volts too 12 volts on my charger, but it failed.I will try to find another vibrator before placeing another order for one as you said $30.00 is kind of high. Thanks again Bill,i do appreciate.

Randall
