Gauge

What gauge wire would be suitable for a ground wire or does it much matter? This would be for a 20's battery radio, of course. I assume even 20 ga or smaller would be ok for the antennae wire.

I like to use readily available 18 guage Zip cord for both the antenna and ground. Easy to get and even easier if you restore old lamps/radios and you have lots of old cord on hand.

For a transmitter, the antenna has to be carefully matched to the feed line, or power will be reflected into the final stage of the transmitter rather than be radiated from the antenna. For a receiver, whatever works is fine. When I rebuilt my Hallicrafters, I had scraps of #18 soldered together for about 75 feet, running from tree to tree in the front yard, for an antenna, and the first thing I picked up was an English language broadcast from Peking, China. I live near Atlanta, GA. Impressed the wife, let me tell you.
