Help with Freshman Masterpiece Ser #57706
10/1/2012 9:11:39 AMBen F
The Freshman Master Piece that I am restoring has an open winding in one of the audio transformers. Does anyone know of a replacement or where I can find a used audio transformer? I noticed that Radio Daze has a replacement audio transformer for a Radiola III that seems to have similar winding specs. My radios circuit is different from the schematic listed on Nostalgia Air. It does not have the c battery terminals listed on the schematic. Thanks for your help. Ben

Ben:

I have actually repaired open transformers by applying a relatively high Dc voltage between the terminals that are open. This "finds" the open and in some cases rewelds the break. I will get back to you after I check on the amount of voltage i applied.

I believe I applied between 75 and 100 volts DC. Everyone agree?

Thanks for the suggestion Lou. I will give it a try. I have a ARBE III battery eliminator that has a 90 volt DC post that I can use. Ben

I tried the DC voltage with no luck so far. I use a 40 mfd cap and charged it with the 135v DC terminal and discharged it through the open winding. I started with the 90 v terminal and worked up to the 135v terminal. Thanks for the suggestion and let me know if you think the replacement Radiola III audio transformer will work. Ben

Ben,

I think what you need is an interstage transformer, there should be two in the radio, replace them both.

I have restored a 1924 Freshman Masterpiece and did replace both interstage transformers.

Go the the ARBE III web site and you will find the interstage transformers you need for $17.50 each.

I will try to post the schematic that only uses the A and B battery.

Unless you get lucky and Sir Edd will post the final schematic that he designed for me.

Hello everyone, just a short note to thank everyone for info regarding my Freshman Masterpiece. Finished the electrical restoration and the radio works, much better than I thought. From research info, I think that it has a Franklin Console cabinet. Many thanks to all. Ben
