Zenith 5S29 coil

I have a really nice Zenith 5s29 to restore, but the lower winding on the "selector / detector coil" is fried. This part is #5-3397 on the schematic. On the schematic it is the equal to the antenna input coil, and tunes broadcast or shortwave band via a selector switch to the mixer stage.

Does anyone have one they could part with?
Has anyone re-wound one ?
any advise is welcome....

I have always wanted to try a re-wind on something like this. Let me know if you don't have any sucess.

Hi Ray,
I once had an Air Castle with a similar ptoblem. A coil for the short wave was fried as though someone had miswired it to the B+ for a few minutes.
The radio got great short wave, though. Your fried coil may work.

Thanks Guys..... what you describe is exactly what i have. An apparently burned lower coil section. I can not read continuity through this section either.. I will have to look at the schematic more closely and match it to the chassis wiring to ensure I am on the right trak here.. but may have to do a careful removal and unwind of the wiring on the terminal(s) on the burnt section which should have clntinuity.. I have not powered up the set because of the burnt coil section (which indeed does look like a B+ issue).. would be a lot easier to replace, but i expect these are scarce....

I think you started me on tbe right track.. though the coil looks burned and it was loose on the bobbin, it turns out it did have continuity.. (one of the under chassis accessable terminals to one of the top of the coil shield can leads going to the external mounted shortwave antenna coil on the main tuning cap body) So,I refastened the loose coil to the bobbin with a dab of Plumbers goop (also sold as Marine Goop, and an excellent felixable fix for loose electrical and mechanical parts) A cautious start-up of the set gave both B.C. and Shortwave reception. So much for visual inspections.... Yes, it could have been a lighting strike to the long wire antenna in a previous life, but is amazing that a coil that looks so bad can still work in an antenna application....

Hi Ray

Might find a coil here:

Doubt if B+ burned the coil. Sometimes lightening or someone plugging the antenna into AC line causes the problem.
