RCA RP-205 G1 Warped Platter.

Hello All,
I can find zero pages on line that discuss this problem. How do I straighten the platter?
On line all I can find is warped records, not warped platter. Do I put it on a level floor and stand on it.
Could it be a bad bearing making it appear to be warped? It definitely has a high spot as it spins. That can also be heard very well on 78s.
Please help if you can. I'm going to try removing and cleaning the bearing.

Thanks,

Dave

Dave: Could it end up cracking if you try to flatten it out? That might be worse. Any way you could make something to go on top that would bring the low side up to the level of the high side? Then you could play records with that and remove it when it is just for show. Just a thought. mark from kalamazoo

Sir Dave . . . . .

In remembering that unit . . . . . and thats some HARD remembering, I 'm thinking of a common steel platter and being joined to its pot metal central shaft at its very center portion.

TOP PHOTO:

On the few cases of that experience, since the platter is recessed down within the base.
I would inuitially use a red grease pencil FIRMLY HELD AND BRACED on the base at the side of the platter
and bring it down s..lo..o..w..l..y to just mark the rim of the platter while spinning at 78 RPM. that would leave me a marker on the edge of the platter as being the " precise " high spot.

Then the pulling off of the center retainer clip in order to let the platter be lifted. BUT . . it was only brought up high enough for just barely getting the 4 fingertips under its edge on the portion 180 degrees away from the high spots marking. The edge near the high spot received the thumb of the other hand. Then you put correcting pressure in it with the thumb, while simultaneously lifting with the other four fingers .
You are cantilevering against the center post.

Then drop the platter down into place again and try it to see if you corrected enough or have overdone it and react accordingly.

Thasssitt . . . . .
