Zenith 5S29

My Zenith model 5S29 makes a crackling noise in the speaker as soon as I turn it on and sometimes won't start to play for quite a long time after turn on. Would the field coil be going bad?

John

Could be almost anything. Have you made any repairs, caps replaced? Tube socket contacts clean? Measure voltages. This will show if there is a field coil problem.

Hi John,
Had the same problem with my'n found it was the tunning condenser grounds that Y'ed off on the condensers shaft. Borrowed my wife finger nail file and cleaned up the shaft were the grounds hit also cleaned up the brass forks of the grounds and it took care of the problem in my case. Good Luck, George T

Hi Again John, one other thing, I found the problem probing around with a pair of chopstix. Hit the one area and the radio cleared up. So check the tunning condenser really good. See Ya
