Would your typical double or triple A alkaline battery (several in series) work as a replacement C battery for my radios requiring various C voltages?

Yes - I dont see why not. A typical number for a C battery volatge would be - 4.5 volts as I remember.
Since this is a low drain application, then a AA or AAA battery should suffice. Correct me if I am wrong, guys!!

How 'bout a coin cell? You can get holders for them, and the CR types are 3 Volts.

Since the C battery supplies zero current, they will last as long as their shelf life. Lithium cells would be ideal.
