Philco 70 problem
6/4/2012 7:28:58 PMDan
I have been trying to repair a Philco 70 for a while and have been stymied by an odd problem. Except for two areas on the dial, the whole A.M. band is blank. The two areas that do receive stations are around 630 and 1000. Each of these two areas have multiple stations jumbled together. It is like the entire dial has been squeezed into these two sections. This condition happens about 80% of the time. There has been a couple of times that it plays great. I am hoping that some of you can point me in the right direction because this is driving me nuts!

This is the older #70 cathedral that has all #24 tubes for the RF. All caps and off value resistors have been replaced. All the tubes check fine and I have substituted them with others just to make sure. I think it's a bad connection or component but everything appears to be fine. Your help would be appreciated

The problem does seem to be the RF section. Did you know about loose screws on the tuning capacitor? This would cause similar priblems. See this link.

It sounds like the dial cord is slipping? But that would be too simple :>)

Hi Dan, sounds like you might have a dirty variable condenser or one of the 2 transformers. Also I like to use Chop Sticks (wooden) to tap and push around on resistors, connections, and the fins on the condenser, etc. Even dirty tube sockets can cause lots of problems. I use pipe cleaners with the metal pieces in them to clean them up a bit. Also did you clean the chassis with steel wool? That can cause a lot of problems too. When it is cutting up wiggle the tubes around. Good Luck, George T
