Freed Eiseman NR6 slight audio distortion
5/19/2012 9:03:32 AMDon Christensen
Hello from a newbie in Idaho. The subject line says it all. I can't quite get a station tuned in without a bit of distortion. At low audio through headphones it sounds better. Any ideas would be appreciated.

tnx.

Hi Don

Detector grid resistor may be open? The radio will still operate but distort with this resistor open. Two meg was a fairly common value.

C bias voltage was usually - 4 1/2 volts. Might try adjusting this voltage for least distortion. Proper setting is determined by type of audio tubes and B+ voltage.

An audio interstage transformer can have an open winding and a radio will still operate distorted.

You might try replacing the coupling cap feeding the signal to the output tube. This is usually a .05 from the plate of the previous stage to the output tube control grid.

That's a good idea for most radios. This one is older and output tube is driven by an audio interstage transformer.

sorry-
I didn't check the schematic. This would be a good time to have a 'scope.
