Hello all, I am trying to get this radio back to life, and was wondering about the filter caps c16 and c17, 8mfd, wich way is the pos leads, towards the speaker field ? the schematic does not identify and old caps are not marked as to pos. thanx.the schematic is the same as a 5S319 .

I wanted to add the transformer resistance measurements to see if that sounds ok, primary coil 30 ohms, filament is justa tad under 1 ohm, the plate coil is 55 ohms and from either side to the center tap I measure 256 ohms,I thought tah that centre tap would measur lower than the 55 ohms that are connected to the plates of the rectifier tube.

C-16 and C-17 both of the positive ends are connected together. Remember the B+ comes off the rectifier filament. The power transformer seems okay.

Ok thank You, I have them installed correct, went with 10mfd 450 volt, any idea where to look as to why transformer is getting really hot and nothing from the speaker? all filaments on tubes lit up, I get aproxamately 1.836 Kohms on field coil and 0.726 kohms on output trans. Also I measure 27.6 ohms on the power plug.

Pull the rectifier tube out of the radio. Run the radio without the tube. If the transformer still gets hot without the tube. There is a shorted winding in the transformer. If the transformer is cool without the tube. You have a short in the B+ somewhere. Could be the rectifier tube is shorted.

OK, Looks like I have a bad transformer, burning smell and hot with no rectifier tube, i suspect that the shorted filter cap that was melted did a number,I will have to look for a suitable replacement, I have one off of a philco 38-12, mabe the core will fit in this zenith one, I know the filament volts is the same, will have to see if the rest matches up.
