2X3 Type Tubes?
12/4/2001 11:56:44 AMDoug B
Does anyone know where I can get two 2X3 tubes? I'm also looking for a 6X6 eye tube. I have already contacted AES, but they have none in stock. Any assistance would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Doug B.

Hi Doug, I can't see any information on a 2X3, what type of tube is it? The 6X6 is equivalent to a 6E5GT. Electron Tube Enterprises at http://members.aol.com/etetubes/ list a 6E5 for $19.00. AES has www.tubesandmore.com list them for $21.00 You'd have to check if they have a GT version or see if what they have will physically fit in your set. Don Black.

Don, the 2X3 is a rectifier. There are two in this Rogers Majestic I'm working on. It also has the 6X6 which is not common either. Is the 6E5GT a direct replacement or just a base change or is there more to it than that?
Thanks for your reply.

Hi Doug, Thanks for the information, I know a 2X2 is a high voltage rectifier but haven't seen anything on the 2X3. The 1964 Vade Mecum data book lists the 6X6 as equivalent to 6E5GT so I think it should be identical. If it used a different base for example it wouldn't show it as an equivalent.
The number 6X6 suggests a metal tube with an octal base. I can't recall any metal eye tubes but if that's the case it will probably match the 6E5GT that also has an octal base, unlike the 6E5 with a 6 pin base. The difference would be all glass construction of the 6E5GT.

In the supplement to "tube Lore" they basicaly decribe it as half of one of the 5 volt rectifiers.

The only one I have seen is a st based Octal glass tube. If Rogers followed industry standards it would have been called a 6X6G .

One unusual characheristic is that it has two shadows, while a 6e5 has one. it is supposed to be a 6 volt 1629 again acording to "Tube Lore"

Hi,
2W3 is supposed to be a substituion. There are many tube vendors online, or you could try Ebay too. They should be available.

Hi Doug,

The 2X3 was a rectifier tube made by Rogers of Canada, and the best specs I can find for it call out 2.5V, 2A filament; 325V out from the plate at 125 mA.

As for the 6X6, it is correct that the 6E5GT (another Canadian tube) will sub for it. I've bought a couple from Phil Hands in Canada (tubestation3@home.com),
it's possible he may have some more. In appearance, the 6X6 looks like a 6E5 with an octal base, as someone mentioned. Those Rogers tubes show up from time to time
on eBay . . I once managed to snag a Rogers 20J8-G from there.

regards,

Joe
