When connecting electrolytics in series, choose capacitors of the same voltage and capacitance rating and parallel the capacitors with an inter-connected resistance voltage divider in order to insure equal distribution of voltage between the capacitors. The resistors should be of the fixed composition type with a resistance tolerance of not greater than 10 per cent. Make sure that the wattage rating of the resistors is high enough to provide an adequate safety factor against damage from overheating. A typical arrangement used in replacing an 8 mfd., 600-volt peak, wet electrolytic by two 10 plus 10 mfd., 450-volt units is shown in figure 1.
