modding an Auto reverb unit to standalone use
1/26/2007 12:43:18 AMjohn toki
Hi people,
please excuse my english,

Im a studio guy and im looking for anything that can
add to my arsenal of sound,

I just found An "Echo-mate II" by automatic radio
(rvb6782). this is a cool little spring reverb unit
that hanged under the dashboard of 60's car. (from what i gather)

I dont have the schematic ( they sell it at sams technical 22$).

Im sure this unit could be easily modded to accept a line level and output line level and be powered by a 12vdc,
I just dont have a clue of the wiring diagram on this thing. ( it has 5 cables hangin ), and i dont know
enough electronics to understand this simple circuit.

Also what is the input and output impedance. Is it supposed to get a speaker level signal and output a speaker level signal. im confused.

Please if anyone has an idea, share it , im sure
many people could benefit from this.

Giving the echomate a new life,

thanks for taking the time to read this
any help is extremely appreciated.

Thanks dave, i found the info that i wasnt getting with google.
If someone could send me the schematic and manual,
that would help me quite a lot.

Only a couple question,

With what audio level is this thing working? is it expecting speaker level at the input?(like from a amp) or line level ?
Same question for the ouput.

more importantly,
Will it be capable of recieving line and driving
a line input?

Like i said, i wish to use the thing for studio
effects.

Thanks for any info, im still new to electronics and i dont know how to figure it out by myself.

Thank to pete .edd, dave for the answers i found
in your previous posts.

The ones I have seen use speaker input and have speaker output. There was a schematic floating around but I don't remember where.

Sir John...

That unit was designed for drive from a common 8 ohm speaker drive line from an auto radios output and it also outputs a like 8 ohm "echo" output to the cars speaker complementing the original signal input.

And yes, the unit was powered by the 12VDC car power and its circuitry consists of a small signal NPN pre amp transistor and its companion PNP germanium power transistor along with but a few parts other than the
spring units.

You were referring to using line input matching , and that could be interpreted as either 5K ohm, or for in studio use..... 500/600 ohm line. Experimentally you might initially attempt interface into the unit through a common Radio Shack 1200 ohm center tapped / 8 ohm output transformer . Using only half the primary winding to get a 600-8 ohm matching and feeding into the input of the unit. The reverb units output then feeds into a second transformer's 8 ohm winding and that provides outputting up to a 600 ohm line impedance.
The reverb springs don't require a very high drive level and most of the "effect" occurs up in the
500~ to 2K~ frequency spectrum, so the inherent response characteristics of those small transformers wouldn't be of major consequence. The echo effect is merely a subdued, background, fill in function.

Somewhere I have a schematic of the unit stored away, of which, I sent a copy to Peter.
However, I believe that enough info was provided on connector outputting along with other info such that
a person could hook up a unit, only using the full info that you found by search on this site.
Your unit is PROBABLY operational, but with the most common potential problem being the possible degradation of its aged electrolytic capacitors within that unit.

Your last task seems to be the locating of a local electronics guru with an additional mestering of
the English language to assist you in any problems
or technical interpretations of that unit.

thank you very much mister Edd, you gave me the info i needed, thanks.
im still new to electronic but i think i can handle that,
ill do some recapping too, thanks.

thanks to you, my unit will have a new life.

Also im sure people could benefit from this since
i have not seen any info on the web to convert auto reverberation device for home. maybe im the only one
stupid enough.....

peace
