an entirely different word for larger or smaller units (as inch, foot, mile) the metric system employs prefixes--centi, kilo, milli, etc.--which are applied to any unit of measurement--as the meter, the liter, the volt, etc.

Some Metric Tables and Their American Equivalents
Kilometer (1000 meters) = 0.624 miles
Meter (1000 meters) = 39.37 inches
Centimeter (1/100 meter) = 0.3937 inches
Milimeter (1/1000 meter) = 0.03937 inches
Metric Ton (1000 Kilograms) = 2204 pounds
Kilogram (1000 grams) = 2.204 pounds
Gram   = 0.035 ounce
Kiloliter (1000 liters) = 264 gallons
Liter   = 1.057 quarts
CentiLiter (1/100 Liter) = .338 fluid counce

     In Table No. 5 you will find a complete list of prefixes used in the metric system. Some of these, such as "milli" and "kilo" you will use time and time again. Others are not
