: : Annie, I have found some old Wilcox-Gay recordable disks. They are old, dirty and may not be usable. You might be interested in them to have something that at least goes with the machine.

: : : I have one of these machines, too. I tried to get blanks from a Wes-Tech in Florida, and was told that it is no longer in business. I am looking for BLANKS. Does anyone know where I can get them to record? I think I have everything else. Please reply to twocats@landmarknet.net. Thanks

My name is Ellon and I have one of the recordettes. I don't know much about it and would like to find out more. I haven't been able to come up with anything in my searches but this. If anyone knows anything about it please let me know. My e-mail is chrisandellon@aol.com Thanks!
Now I'm thinking it might be possible for me to actually have the disc fixed so I can hear it!
It's highly unlikely because there are hundreds of little cracks all over the surface, but I
thought I'd give it a try, anyway.
Can you advise me? Do you know of anyone who does this kind of thing?
The disc is marked Wilcox-Gay Corporation, Charlotte, Mich., and the words "Slow
Burning" are visible. Around the centre are the words "Recordio Disc." The date Dec. 9/47 is
written on it in pencil, in what appears to be my hand, but my recollection is my Dad and I
recorded it in December of 1944.
Anyway, if you could advise me I'd be tremendously grateful.

If you would like to listen to the record take it to some one with an old 78 rpm garrard turntable. (Thorens or any other good brand
that will turn at 78 will be fine too) Have them set the weight 0n the heavy side and use a sharpened tooth pick as the needle. Cactus is fine if you can find it.
New needles will be much to small to track in the large canyon cut by the original cutter.
If it will track you can most likely make a tape of the output. It than can then be filtered for the pops and clicks that most likely will be produced by the cracks.
If the noise level is too high there are several tricks you can try.
1) Using a photo lens brush brush and blow away any dust you can see in a bright light.
Try recording the result.
2) gently wash the surface with clean water and laying the disk down on a soft absorbant towell to dry.
Try recording the result.
3)Take mineral oil (not a thinner or petrolium based but either mineral oil or vegetable oil in a thin coat over the surface.
Try recording the result.
the mineral oil acts as a dampening medium and allows the pickup needle to skip over the minor scratches what cause hiss.
A scientific approach would be to direct a laser beam at the grove, pick up the reflections and use this to modulate a carrier. Detecting this carrier using digital filters and techniques would produce the best
possible from what you have remaining. If your name is not Crosby or Caruso you problably don't need to go to this trouble.
Good Luck.

I don't have an answer to your query, but instead have one of my own! I hope you can help me.
: For more than 50 years I have had in my possession a recording made when my Dad and I
: arrived in Vancouver. We had stopped in a small recording studio and cut a disc with a few
: inconsequential remarks on it. I was 9. I've just come across the disc (it's one-sided, about 6
: inches wide) again and, just for the heck of it, entered "Wilcox-Gay" into a browser. I was
: flabbergasted to see a flock of entries.

: The cutting head and playback were both crystal and no doubt are long since inoperative. The tone arm was rather heavy to allow the cutting needle (which was a stout chisel with a V shaped cutting surface.
: The slow buring was to indiate that this acetate surface had been formulated to act less like a fire bomb than the earliest ones.

:::I'm looking for a photo image of this recorder. I'm specifically trying to track down a WWII era recording booth that would have been set up in local stores where relatives could record a message to be sent off to a soldier. I image it would resemble our photo booths in malls. Could anyone help?
