Vibrator for Buick car radio (1941)
7/5/1999 5:55:09 PMGidi Verheijen
I am searching for a vibrator for a Buick Sonomatic radio (1941). It is a 6 volt type, with negative ground and 6 pens.
Unfortunately, the replacements offered by Antique Electronic Supply are not adequate for this purpose.
Who can provide me with information how to get the wanted piece of equipment ?

Hi Gidi

Your vibrator being 6 pin is probably synchronous, also acting as the rectifier. Most of the car radios in the US used 3 or 4 pin and had a separate rectifier tube. I am asking around for a 6 pin type.

You may be able to repair your present vibrator. Over time the points oxidize and 6 volts isn't enough to break down this oxidization. I will email you an article on how to break down this oxidization coating without disassembling the vibrator.

There is a firm that offers a solid state vibrator
in Florida that replaces the old synchronous types.
Several Buicks in the 30s and even into the 50s I believe took
synchonous types.
In fact I have thought about buying one just to take
it apart to see how it works! I can't seem to be able
to develop it myself. I will need to dig out the paper,
contact me at brose@erinet.com if you don't see another
post i na reasonable time!

The synchronous vibrator for this Buick set was unique to the 1940-42, and possibly 1946 Buick sets. They pop up occasionally at radio meets.
The set was built by RCA as were most Buick sets from 1936 to immediate postwar. The radio must be operated in a negative ground power supply.
Synchronous vibrators care about battery polarity. Let's
hope that the article that Norm sent will get you out
of the woods. I get vibrators working quite often, but
it's a hard process to describe.
