| On a side note, if you were scoping after the detector, or perhaps even at the detector, you would only see the 400Hz tone. The IF would be rectified and filtered, and all RF components would be removed by the small value RF filter capacitor you find in the detector circuit. On the other hand, if you connected your scope across the 2nd IF secondary, with all detector circuitry removed, you would then see the IF, and possibly some other frequencies if the oscillator was in fact working (IF, osc., sum, dif.).
