Crackling problem solved, but can't receive stations.

The rotors of the tuning condenser are tied to the frame, and this is connected to the AVC circuit, and are coupled RF-wise to the return of the antenna circuit and the oscillator circuit (common--B-) via the .05MFD cap. If there is a wire connecting from one of the screws on the condenser frame to the AVC circuit, then all is well.
