Crackling problem solved, but can't receive stations.

: The absence of crackling indicates you have cleared the silver mica disease. The 455KHz getting through the IF stages indicates teh IFs are OK, as long as the signal input is low of course.

Yeah, I think you're right about the oscillator. I tried the ole-"put another radio next to it and try to rock the osc"-trick, and nothing!
I'm going to pull the osc coil, check it out and replace the old parts. The good thing is that it DID work, so now it's just a matter of isolating the problem. I've learned a lot about working on the IF/mixer/osc section, and learning is always fun.
