Thanks Norm, The hum is evident even with the volume down and does not disappear when tuned to a station. I've owned the set for several years and to my knowledge, nothing has been replaced. It worked great until the hum started and now hums so loudly that station reception is barely audible. I've searched locally for someone to make repairs with no luck, the old-timers are gone and if it isn't solid state, the folks around here have no idea where to begin. I thought I'd make an attempt myself but I too, don't really where to begin. Any advice would be appreciated. Hi Mike :: :: Is there hum with volume turned down? :: :: If not has any shielded wire been replaced? Is the 1st audio amplifier tube shielded? :: :: When the volume control can be turned down and hum goes away it's usually not electrolytic filter caps. Radios may have a little hum but it shouldn't be heard while receiving a station. :: :: Wires going to the first audio amplifier should be shielded if they are longer than a couple inches. If non shielded wire is used there will be some hum. Try changing routing of any replaced wire around the volume control. :: ::Norm :: :: :: :::Hello, Please excuse my ignorance but I need help. I have an Airline console(1930's) that hums. The humming increases with the volume control.Having trouble locating any remaining old-timers that know how to repair it and thought I might attempt it myself. Anyone on the forum any advice?
