I did it with almost 3 miles of #32 wire, but it's not for the faint of heart. First of all the speaker/field coil assembly must be easily disassembled to allow access to the core/bobbin (usually cardboard, square, round etc) I made a winder using an ice cream maker motor/transmission with an approx 90 rpm rate. Took 4 days at 1 hour intervals guiding the wire (15000 ft) onto the core.

:Mark, I'm not familiar with this particular set. But if the field coil isn't open at the ends, then I fear the only solution would be to unwind and rewind the field coil. The length of the winding would be daunting: a mile of wire wouldn't be unusual. You'd need a coil winder, for sure - not just an electric drill.
