As Norm says, there is a difference in the geometry of the envelope. I'm thinking that the smaller 6U5 should fit where an original 6G5 was intended. At most, I'd expect a little nip or tuck in the tube holder would be the most required.

: Electrically 6U5 and 6G5 are the same. Only glass shape is different. 6U5 has straight sides. 6G5 is ST shaped. Later tubes may be dual marked 6U5/6G5 and have straight sides.
