roof vs. long wire antenna

I'm unsure of the distinction between the two. A "roof antenna" can very well be a long-wire antenna, and vice versa.

The longer and higher the better. Depending upon the direction you hope to listen to, the orientation can matter.

:All the old radio books recommend a long wire antenna. Would I get better reception by running a wire between my house and garage or a roof antenna?
