roof vs. long wire antenna

:All the old radio books recommend a long wire antenna. Would I get better reception by running a wire between my house and garage or a roof antenna?

:Generally speaking, the higher the better with antennas.

Having said that, I have had excellent reception results with a simple 25 foot piece of insulated copper wire run along the baseboard of my living room when used with old broadcast and shortwave band radios.
